California Non-Resident CCW through Riverside County.

Standard California CCW licenses issued before January 1, 2027, keep the expiration date printed on the license. Beginning January 1, 2027, standard licenses issued or renewed may be valid for up to three years, depending on the issuing agency’s issuance period. Existing two-year licenses are not automatically extended.

California law requires the issuing agency to give written notice of approval or denial within 120 days of receiving a completed initial application, or 30 days after receiving the required DOJ information, whichever is later. For renewal applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, a similar later-date rule applies. This is a deadline for a decision notice, not a promise that a permit will be issued within 120 days. Applicants should follow requests in their Sheriff application.

As of January 1, 2026, membership in a specific organization is not required to apply as a Non-Resident.

You may begin the Sheriff application and interview before submitting training and qualification records. Create your Sheriff account, complete the online course, qualify with a certified instructor, and upload records when requested. Follow the requests and deadlines in your own application.

Non-Resident initial applicants may choose a virtual interview or arrange an in-person interview with the Sheriff, subject to available appointments. Both choices may not always appear in the online scheduler.

Yes. Non-Residents may complete the Riverside Sheriff’s course of fire with a certified instructor near home, or qualify in California with Riverside CCW Training.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office reviews the application, makes the permit decision, and issues the license. Riverside CCW Online and Riverside CCW Training do not make application or permit decisions.

Riverside County allows up to six firearms on a permit, and you must qualify with each one. California’s handgun roster governs which models may be sold in California; being absent from the roster does not, by itself, prevent a Non-Resident from listing an otherwise lawful handgun. The firearm must be lawful to possess and carry in California and accepted by the Sheriff. For this program, do not bring a handgun with a threaded barrel or magazines holding more than 10 rounds. Ask us about a specific firearm before booking qualification.

Riverside County does not list a psychological evaluation as a standard step in its published CCW application process. California law permits an issuing agency to require an assessment for an initial application, so follow any instructions the Sheriff gives you for your individual application.

No Riverside address, business, or family connection is listed as a general Non-Resident requirement. You must truthfully attest that Riverside County is the primary California location where you intend to travel or spend time. Riverside’s current application portal also asks you to attest that you intend to spend time in its jurisdiction within the following 12 months.
